MIAMI BEACH, FLA. — A 7-foot spinner shark plummeted out of the sky and into a luxury rooftop pool on Saturday, abruptly ending both a lavish pool party and, ultimately, the shark.
The animal was presumably doing what spinner sharks do — launching out of the water and rotating through the air, a genuine hunting behavior that gives the species its name — when it leapt directly into a waterspout off Miami Beach and was sucked skyward.
Local surfer Spacoli Stacker watched the whole thing from the lineup.
“I’ve seen ‘em jump and spin a hundred times, bro. A hundred,” he said. “But this one just kept going. Up and up. Spinning the whole way. Just… committed.”
The shark, caught in the spout, was carried several miles inland before the column collapsed over the rooftop pool of the five-star Hotel Sapphire Sands.
There, roughly 27 stories up, the shark completed its journey by falling directly into the deep end.
Witnesses at the rooftop bar were, understandably, confused. Socialite Bunny Vanderhook, who was on her sixth or possibly seventh mimosa, initially assumed the problem was her. “I saw a shark come down out of a clear blue sky and land in the pool,” Vanderhook said. “I set the drink down. I thought, Bunny, you’ve finally done it. One too many.” She had not. There was, in fact, a shark.
The party was immediately crashed and cancelled — a decision that devastated Vanderhook and the rest of her cougar club, who had cabanas reserved until close.
By the time paramedics arrived, the spinner shark could not be revived. Responders tried everything, including “those shocker things,” to no avail. No humans were injured.
The Hotel Sapphire Sands declined to comment on whether the pool would reopen, or on what its liability waiver says about aquatic life arriving by air.
Spacoli Stacker, for his part, remained at peace with what he had witnessed.
“That shark caught his fifty-year storm,” he said, still bobbing in the lineup. “Went out like Bodhi — biggest, wildest ride of his whole life. Honestly, bro? I’m jealous.”
